California's Joshua tree could become first to win protections because of climate crisis



The 2.5m-year-old tree would be the first plant species protected by law in state as current habitat increasingly becomes less viable

Western Joshua trees in the United States will get a year of temporary endangered species status in California while the state considers permanently listing the distinctive succulents as the first-ever plant species protected because of climate change–related threat.
